assessment

While there are many forms of assessment that I employ in the classroom (quizzes, tests, written assignments, workbooks, etc.), my favorite to use are project-based assessments. These assessments allow for choice, inquiry and hands-on learning, which increase student engagement and interest. They are very proud of their achievements and are always so excited to share their projects with me and their fellow students. I can't wait to see what my students come up with next!

To wrap up our study of the novel, The Giver by Lois Lowry, Grade 7 students chose a project to demonstrate their learning and understanding of the themes and ideas in the novel.

LA 7: Recreate the Community Project for "The Giver" Unit

During our "Step into the Shoes of a Storyteller" unit, students read famous myths and legends and examined the attributes of the characters. Their assignment was to choose one of the characters we studied and design a shoe for that character, using objects and symbols to represent the attributes and characteristics they identified in their chosen character.

Social 10: Slavery Poster Project

During our study of Globalization, we explored slavery and its effects throughout the world in Grade 10 Social Studies. After learning about it, students designed a poster protesting slavery. Students used facts and figures about slavery to make their points.

To culminate our year in Grade 7 Language Arts, students chose a disaster to research. They gave a presentation to the class, teaching about the disaster they studied. Students were able to present via Powerpoint, poster or website.

LA 7: Disasters Research Project

During the Christmas season, students chose a country and researched that country's Christmas traditions. This was a great way for students to learn about another country and compare their holiday traditions. It allowed students to see that different places in the world celebrate holidays in different ways.
